Session Overview: 

1. Understanding the Geography Journey: From F–10 to VCE and Beyond

Presenter: Danielle O’Leary, Curriculum Resources Manager, GTAV
Danielle will set the scene by outlining the current educational landscape for Geography in secondary schools. She will highlight how the F–10 and VCE Geography curricula build the foundations for tertiary study, and share insights from the Geography Careers Brochure 2025–26. This session will emphasise how school-based Geography equips students with the knowledge and skills that translate into a wide range of future pathways.

2. Tertiary Pathways & Opportunities in the Geospatial Sector

Presenters: Dr. Lucas Holden, Senior Lecturer, and Mariela Soto-Berelov, Associate Professor – RMIT University School of Science
Lucas and Mariela will provide an overview of Geography-related study options at RMIT, with a focus on geospatial science. They will explore current and emerging career opportunities, discuss industry trends, and share supporting data to illustrate the growing demand for geospatial expertise. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how tertiary study can unlock diverse roles across government, private, and environmental sectors.

3. Geography and the Planning Profession

Presenter: Planning Institute of Australia
This segment will connect school-based Geography to the world of planning. Hear about the critical role Geographers play in shaping communities, infrastructure and sustainable environments, and the expanding range of jobs where Geography graduates are in high demand. Participants will learn how planning careers draw directly on geographic skills such as spatial thinking, environmental understanding and problem-solving.

4. A Geographer in the Field: Ecology & Conservation Management

Presenter: Ben O’Leary, Bushland Management Officer, Yarra Ranges Council
Ben will share his experience as an in-field Geographer working in ecology and conservation management. He will provide real-world examples of how geographic training supports decision-making, land management and ecological protection at the local government level. This session offers valuable insight into what day-to-day work looks like in applied environmental roles.
